Rock and Roll Saturday – The Troggs

July 9, 2011

Few bands reach the level of “Cult” status. England’s “The Troggs“, is one of them.

Not only did they bring us “Wild Thing“, a Billboard #1 hit exactly 45 years ago this week, they are remembered for their many UK hits. “With A Girl Like You”, “I Can’t Control Myself”, “Anyway That You Want Me”, “Give It To Me” and “Love Is All Around”.

The Troggs garnered world-wide acclaim and are to this day considered the “first British punk band”.

They continue be in high demand in Europe with founding members Reg Presley out front and Chris Britton playing lead guitar. They are rounded out by bassist Pete Lucas and drummer Dave Maggs.

Their hit song “Wild Thing,” written by Chip Taylor (Jon Voight’s brother), is ranked #257 on the Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Perhaps my favorite Rock and Roll cover of all time is Sam Kinison‘s performance and subsequent video of Wild Thing. It features cameos from Rodney Dangerfield, as well as many well-known rock musicians including, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry from AerosmithSlash and Steven Adler of Guns N’ RosesBilly IdolSteve VaiDweezil ZappaSebastian BachRichie Sambora of Bon Jovi, and Tommy Lee. The video also featured a raunchy “roll on the mat” dance with Jim Bakker’s Church secretary, Jessica Hahn.

The Trogg’s website is found here.

That’s arguably THE best 80s music video ever! The hair, the clothes, the cast…perfectly 80s.

Don’t forget that Senator Evert Derkson also did a popular cover of Wild Thing!
