World’s Youngest Grandmother is 23

March 14, 2011

I think that bears repeating…

Our story begins just a few short years ago in a Romanian village where 11 year-old, Rifca Stanescu, married a 13-year-old jewelry seller. She was afraid of being married off to an older man. (I assume that means older than 13.)

Within a year year she gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Maria, and all was well with Maria’s 12 year-old mother. Rifca settled in to raise her new daughter.

Fast forward ten years. Daughter Maria, carrying on the family tradition, strolled down the matrimonial aisle at the age of 10, and then promptly had a baby of her own after she turned 11. This somewhat bizarre circumstance makes her 23 year old mom the world’s youngest grandmother.

I imagine Rifca’s mom is still getting her head wrapped around being a great-grandmother at age 40.

In what world is it all right for a 5th grader to get married?

Turns the stomach a wee bit…

Ye cats. I’ll never rant about underage marriages of 14 or 15 again.

This is just so messed up. How would you like to be a great-grandmother at 40? Hell, at this rate, Rifca could be a great-grandmother by 35.

At that age I’d just started wearing long pants.
