I came across this little gem in a book I am reading…

June 13, 2010

“Stopping a piece of work just because it’s hard, either emotionally or imaginatively, is a bad idea. Sometimes you have to go on when you don’t feel like it, and sometimes you are doing good work when it feels like all you are managing to do is shovel shit from a sitting position.”
~ Steven King – On Writing

It’s very timely considering where I am in the writing process.

I think we’ve both experienced writing something that we think is shit, only to be surprised by the acclaim it receives from everyone else. You are NOT shoveling shit, lol. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a dozen times: Not all progress is linear.

It cuts both ways, though, in my experience. Sometimes I’ll write something I think is golden only to see it trashed by the writing group. There’s a sweet spot between rushing and procrastinating. I wish I could find it reliably. King is right, though, that there’s no good excuse for not continuing to write. Even if it’s not what you’re looking for it can erode the dam. I’m definitely guilty of letting hard spots stop me dead. Sounds like the makings of a resolution for 2010.
